Dennis White Obituary

WHITE, DENNIS C. "DIGGER" He had a love of life that his struggle with ALS did not diminish. As the owner of Mt. Scott Funeral Home, he knew that life was precious and brief. He firmly believed in the Golden Rule and treated families with the compassion he would want to receive. He was full of love and laughter. Born in Portland in 1946 of Oregon pioneer stock, he grew up in Eastmoreland, graduating from Holy Family School and Milwaukie High School. He then went to San Francisco Mortuary College and later joined the Coast Guard Reserve. He enjoyed cutting wood and bird hunting in Eastern Oregon. He started fishing in Garibaldi on a troller in 1964; he then went on to dory fishing in Pacific City, where he was part of the dory fleet for 35 years. When regulations became too confusing and fishing too slow, he started going to Alaska. Never doing anything in a small way, he embraced the town of Craig, Alaska wholeheartedly. He built a special fishing boat and, with the help of friends, a home that he loved. He enjoyed the best fishing of his life there and loved sharing that part of the world with others. He adopted the local café slogan "Life is short, eat your pie first!" and had been known to order 10 pies a week from the famous pie lady of Craig. The struggle is over - let's hope the angels can keep up with you. We never could. He is survived by his wife Jeanie, children Ed and Nattinee White of Juneau, Alaska and Andrea and Patrick Wyatt of Portland, Oregon and brother Mike of Kamala and Phuket, Thailand. Mass at Holy Family Catholic Chapel, July 1, 2005 at 11 a.m. Contributions in his memory may be made to Prince of Wales Hatchery Association, ALS Association, Hopewell House or Providence Hospice.
